Sam Hargrave, director of Extraction, is joining the production of the second season of The Mandalorian as a second unit director.
The American filmmaker confirmed the news exclusively through Collider, while also revealing that Disney had approached Hargrave while he was busy with the post-production for Extraction, the hit Netflix action movie that starred Chris Hemsworth.
According to Hargrave, Colin Wilson, one of the executive producers of The Mandalorian, had called him, saying that the hit TV series’ producers, including Jon Favreau, had wanted to bring in a guy with an extensive background in directing action sequences.
Action movie track record
Hargrave is no stranger to directing action scenes, especially with his past work as a stuntman and stunt coordinator.
While it is true that this year’s Extraction is his directorial debut, the filmmaker cut through the entertainment industry as a stunt double, as well as a second unit director specializing in choreographing action sequences.
As a stuntman, he’s done screen time in full-length feature films such as Conan the Barbarian (Jason’s Momoa’s version, not Arnie’s), Atomic Blonde (starring Charlize Theron), the Russo brothers’ Avengers: Endgame, and this year’s Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (starring Margot Robbie).
Joining the Star Wars team
While speaking with Collider, Hargrave shared that the team behind the first season of The Mandalorian already did an impressive job with regards to the series’ action scenes.
But now the producers are looking to build upon the success of the first season by taking the story and the action to a higher level in the second season. And now they’re bringing in Hargrave’s expertise and experience when it comes to coordinating action.
Hargrave also talked about how the production of The Mandalorian combines conventional live-action filmmaking techniques with blue screen methods, plus a technology called “The Volume.”
For the record, Hargrave is far from being the only action director to join The Mandalorian production crew.
Disney has also tapped the talents of other proven names such as Robert Rodriguez (Alita: Battle Angel, Desperado) and Peyton Reed (Ant-Man and the Wasp).
Apart from the expanded roster of directors, The Mandalorian’s cast is also growing, with Rosario Dawson (per IndieWire) and Timothy Olyphant (per The Hollywood Reporter) reportedly joining in on the fun.
The Mandalorian and beyond
After his involvement with the production of The Mandalorian, Hargrave is expected to work on the sequel for Extraction.
The 2020 action thriller was based on the graphic novel Ciudad and was adapted to the screen by Joe and Anthony Russo, Ande Parks, Fernando Leon Gonzalez, and Eric Skillman.
As for the sequel, Deadline had reported last month that Joe Russo would be working on the screenplay.
