A multi-layer face mask can help reduce COVID-19 transmission.
Face mask mandates have become increasingly apparent amid the COVID-19 pandemic. While this does not eliminate the risk of contracting the virus, it helps decrease the potential transmission from one person to another.
For months, the public has discussed matters relating to face coverings and masks. It appears to have continued these days, especially now that countries are opening their borders for air travel.
Healthline recently released a report to discuss the best and ideal face cover for travelling amid the pandemic. In the same material, experts also shared their take on the subject.
Best face mask for air travel
Houston Methodist Hospital expert Firas Zabaneh said that the best face mask has a “good fit” and high filtration efficiency. He stated that it should cover the mouth and the nose, adding that it must not leave gaps around the edges. He explained that this is for preventing the inhalation of unfiltered air.
Apart from these considerations, Zabaneh noted that the mask also needs to be breathable and comfortable. Even so, he recommended that it is best to test it out before the flight.
Available masks on the market
In the same engagement, the expert discussed the different types of face masks. There are generally two types that are available to the average consumer, he asserted.
Firas Zabaneh began with the first type, which is a reusable cloth as a face mask. He shared that while cloth masks have received some criticisms amid the pandemic, many manufacturers now conduct tests to show the materials’ effectiveness. He, then, stated that they are a “great alternative” to disposable masks, which are the second type.
The expert continued that there are other types of face coverings, such as medical-grade masks and N95 respirators. While the former are sometimes available on the market for the general consumers, he said that the latter are “not necessary for most public settings.”
Overall, though, Zabaneh stressed that the “better masks” are those with three or four layers of material. But, a good rule of thumb is to ensure that manufacturers are doing tests, alongside certified independent labs that have a good reputation.
Protection from COVID-19
Health officials and experts say that the COVID-19 pandemic is far from over. Although there have been some improvements, leading to the easing of some measures, mask mandates will likely remain apparent, according to Web MD.
As explained, a face mask can help slow the further spread of COVID-19. Alongside blocking the release of virus-filled droplets into the air from an infected person, it also reduces the exposure of other individuals to infectious droplets. Hence, it is a form of protection not only for the wearer but to other people, as well.
