Facebook NFTs will be displayed on creators’ timelines through a “digital collectibles” tab. On Thursday, Meta technical program manager Navdeep Singh shared screenshots of NFTs and a creator’s page on Twitter.
NFT creators will eventually be able to cross-post between Facebook and Instagram, another Meta property.
In addition, Instagram is experimenting with NFTs in its Spark AR augmented reality platform.
Facebook NFTs to be rolled out gradually
On the same day, a Meta representative told TechCrunch that NFTs would be gradually implemented on Facebook, beginning with select creators in the United States.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in May that it had started testing NFTs on Instagram and that Facebook would “soon” do the same. The NFT display capabilities would soon be applied to other Meta-owned apps including WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, he continued.
Instagram last week launched its NFT testing to users outside of the United States. The program enables the display of NFTs created on Polygon and Ethereum, with plans to also support Solana and Flow NFTs.
A major leap into the Metaverse
In October 2021, Facebook relaunched as Meta. It has worked hard to expand in Web3, but not all of its attempts have been fruitful. Meta abandoned its plan to launch the Diem stablecoin in February after facing stiff pushback from regulators throughout the world.
Nonetheless, in May, Meta applied for a trademark for a Meta Pay payments platform, and on June 22nd, Zuckerberg revealed that Meta Pay would be phased out and swept away.
According to Zuckerberg, Meta Pay will be available on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook Messenger. On Facebook, however, a company rep said that “Meta would not provide the opportunity to transform digital collectible posts into advertising for now,” suggesting that Meta will not start selling NFTs there.
NFT sales are planned to begin through the company’s Meta Quest app store, which provides programs and games for Meta’s metaverse.
