The world of virtual reality (VR) is starting to emerge once again as Logitech partners with Facebook to unveil the new Oculus Quest 2.
Around 2016, Oculus debuted itself in the world of VR by introducing Rift. In 2019, they also released the Rift S. However, due to its heavy price tag, it may have not attracted with some enthusiasts and they also needed a high-spec PC to play VR games.
Last May 2019, VR made a debut on going wireless as well as standalone with the Oculus Quest and this year we are already seeing a second iteration the VR headset.
People who bought the first wireless VR may be scratching their heads right now as the recent Facebook Connect announced the Quest 2 to be a cheaper and lighter solution for wireless VR.
Both the Oculus Rift S and the Quest were priced at US$399 [AU$546] and the Quest 2 is priced $100 cheaper. To put the nail in the coffin, they also said that they will be discontinuing their Rift lineup since unveiling this new VR headset.
A game-changing VR that could change the digital landscape
Oculus Quest 2 comes packed with a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Platform processor that offers higher AI capability along with 6GB of RAM.
The new display features up to 1832 x 1920 pixels per eye which are 50% more than its predecessor as well as their highest resolution up to date plus a 90Hz refresh rate when running system applications.
When it comes to delivering the best VR games and experiences, Quest 2 gives you access to their rich content library which will also include exciting upcoming titles like Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge, Myst, Jurassic World Aftermath, and many more.
The Quest 2 also includes an adjustable IPD (interpupillary distance) to let people adjust their lens position for visual comfort.
More accessories revealed to get the most of VR
Quest 2 will also support a new line of optional accessories which include customizable head straps and facial interface add-ons to give people the flexibility to play the way they want.
An extra battery add-on is also available to prolong your playtime as the battery life lasts around 1-2 hours and charging may be a bit slower according to a CNET video review.
Logitech also introduced their G333 VR Gaming Earphones and PRO Gaming Headset as well and it looks like they are very much on board with supporting Facebook’s VR platform.
With the Xbox Series X and the PlayStation 5 coming out this year, we may see another competitor emerging in the world of gaming with Oculus putting itself on the market.
If you don’t mind the mandatory requirement to log in to Facebook to play your VR games, then the Oculus Quest 2 may be worth getting and they are now available for pre-order and they ship on October 13.
