The numbers are now out, and it’s confirmed: Fall Guys for PC is a hit. The fun battle royale party game had the highest launch revenue since Overwatch.
According to market analysis firm Superdata, Mediatonic has a hit on their hands. Fall Guys for PC is one of the most massive moneymakers on the platform. The game has now earned an estimate of US$185 million on the PC alone.
If the numbers are right, Fall Guys is the biggest title of 2020 so far. It’s the biggest launch since Blizzard’s Overwatch, which came out in 2016.
Devolver Digital had millions of downloads at launch
The numbers for Mediatonic and Devolver Digital’s game are massive. The game costs US$20 on the PC, which has millions of downloads, not counting microtransactions. To be specific, it has generated an estimated 9.25 million downloads.
Like any estimate, the 9.25 million at launch will likely be lower. Superdata confirmed that they have an estimate of around 8.2 million downloads. Devolver’s numbers last month put the game at 7 million units on Steam.
People should take into account that Fall Guys was free on the PSPlus at launch. The Mediatonic title is the top game on PC for the month of August. It won the top spot off some big-budget AAA titles launching on the PC at the time.
Fall Guys beat Horizon Zero Dawn at launch
August had some titles launching apart from Fall Guys on PC. For starters, Horizon Zero Dawn launched around the same time. Even with its bug-addled launch, the PS4 exclusive sold 716,000 units that month.
Superdata’s numbers show that those numbers are bigger than those of Death Stranding. The numbers also exceed the sales of well-established titles. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey fared less, to nobody’s surprise.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was the biggest performer for consoles in terms of revenue. Even then, the one with the widest growth is, surprisingly, Fortnite.
The Marvel-themed Fortnite generated a 76% growth in revenue for PC and consoles. These offset the loss in iOS and Mac users so far, together with their Android players.
Another party game, Among Us, had similarly spectacular growth in its player base in August. The game received as many as 18.4 million downloads in August alone. This unprecedented growth would make a ton of revenue, if not for the fact that the mobile version is free.
Fall Guys on PC will end its first season this October. The second season will have more in store with its medieval theme. Players will have access to knights, wizards, dragons, and much more.
