The devs at Fall Guys admitted that they once considered a “Red Light, Green Light” mode for their game, saying that the emergence of the event with Squid Game is making them reconsider.
In their booth at EGX, the game media caught with Mediatonic, the devs for the hit party game Fall Guys. They talked about the general inspiration for their game, as well as would-be scenarios for more game modes.
The game’s lead designer Joe Walsh admitted that they once tried Red Light, Green Light even before Squid Game made it popular. While they believed that it won’t work, the Korean TV show’s implementation gave them a great idea that will fit their game’s mantra.
Fall Guys’ events inspired by TV shows
Talking about the game’s success, Walsh told TechRadar that their inspiration comes from TV. As everyone already knows, Fall Guys is a similar game to the TV show Takeshi’s Castle and Wipeout. The variety runner game is adding more game modes, as well as different costumes available to their players.
“The difference with Fall Guys is that we were inspired by television,” said Walsh. “And it ended up being quite perfect timing with the growth of Twitch while we were working on the game. But really the inspiration for it is Takeshi’s Castle and Total Wipeout. It’s A Knockout for people who are maybe a bit older.
“And those game shows are so amazing. I spent my childhood watching them and loving them, and I’ve always wondered what it would be like to compete on those shows. And that was really the genesis of Fall Guys. I think that’s what makes it so unique is that it’s the only game to draw inspiration from that area. I think it’s been a big reason as to why it’s been such a hit.”
Squid Game rekindled interest in devs for new mode
Fall Guys is looking to add more game modes and they’re looking no further than the Korean show Squid Game. The latter is a deadly mix of childhood games and murder games, recently becoming the most-viewed show on Netflix. Walsh noted they’re trying something they rejected before.
“Within a video game there’s something about movement, which is in real life it’s very hard to stay still,” added Walsh. “But in a video game, you just put your controller down. And so at the time, I think we were like ‘we’ll never do Red Light, Green Light, it doesn’t make sense.’ But now seeing how popular Squid Game is I’d love for us to have another crack at something like that and see if we could do it in Fall Guys.”
Fall Guys is adding more and more content through the coming months. How they’ll implement such an iconic event is anybody’s guess.
