“Farmville” developer, Zynga now looks at the NFT market potential.
Zynga launched the original Farmville title in 2009. It immediately drew millions of fans across the globe, leading to its worldwide success.
Years later, the game developer launched a few more iterations of the game on mobile. Despite the shut down of the original title last year, the franchise continues to have a massive following.
With the rise of NFT-based games in recent times, many are wondering whether the title will become one. The talks about the matter became even more apparent when Zynga announced its plans to integrate Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) in its “existing portfolio.”
Zynga’s new blockchain gaming division
The new plans of Zynga came as it hired former EA executive Matt Wolf. He is now the Vice President of the company’s new blockchain gaming division.
iTechPost said that he will oversee the development of blockchain technology and NFT integration on the developer’s products, both existing and new ones. As Zynga stated, they would be “early adopters” to the emerging technologies and platforms.
Speaking to TechCrunch, CEO Frank Gibeau shared a few words about moving across platforms and entering new systems. He said that, in terms of gaming, one can “get caught out” if one misses the next platform.
He added that it can be “pretty painful” when getting things wrong. Hence, developing “experiences on these social platforms to see if there is any interest” would be cool.
Farmville becoming an NFT-based game
The Zynga CEO also talked about the company’s new hire, Matt Wolf for its blockchain gaming division. He noted that the former EA executive is “setting up a skunkworks project to identify the best path forward.”
Gibeau continued that Wolf will be looking at things, including those within its existing portfolio. He cited “how owning a farm in the Farmville franchise could drive greater engagement and retention” as one of them.
Following these statements, fans have become eager to learn whether it will soon become a play-to-earn NFT-based game. Reports also pointed out that most of Zynga’s online products already have features that are essential for NFT titles.
But, as to whether Farmville will become one, the game developer, alongside its reps, has yet to confirm. It never elaborated the details of its plans, in terms of integrating NFTs into its portfolio.
Accordingly, there is no assurance that Farmville will become a play-to-earn NFT-based game. Nevertheless, the public will soon know for sure as the company plans to “move at Zynga speed,” CEO Gibeau asserted.
