Since stealing the show during the PlayStation 5 Showcase, Final Fantasy XVI has become a hot topic in the gaming community. How long has the game been in development, though?
The PlayStation 5 Showcase event last week was full of surprises, perhaps the biggest of which is the reveal of Final Fantasy XVI. Fans are eager to get their hands on the game, but Square Enix itself has said that players shouldn’t expect to see it soon. Just how deep in development is the game in any way?
Deep in development
According to recent reports, the game has already been in development for four years. After hearing the news, some fans are claiming that the game will come sooner than expected. Of course, this is great news considering that the game looks amazing.
The new came from Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, who appeared on the Triple Click podcast. In the interview, he notes that the game has hit a critical milestone in development already and that the game will launch soon. However, fans should still take it with a grain of salt as the rumors have yet to be verified.
More patience needed
Even if the game is four years deep in development, fans should still try to be patient. Square Enix does take time when it comes to developing new entries for the Final Fantasy series. For instance, Final Fantasy XV itself was in development for a decade. However, this is because the game underwent many changes during its development.
The trailer for Final Fantasy XVI makes it seem like that Square Enix has the game’s gameplay and story planned already. The trailer showed some snippets of combat, but beyond that, we’ve yet to see exploration, progression, and other key features.
When a developer hits four years in developing a game, this basically means that they are already past the halfway mark. Although Square Enix is yet to give us a release date, fans are speculating that they could be steering away from such news in the meantime as they want to reveal a release date when it’s already nearby.
Final Fantasy XVI looks to be a return to form from the franchise in terms of theme and story. It will be a PlayStation 5 exclusive, and fans are undoubtedly excited about it. Fans are hoping that the developers will reveal more about the game at least before the year ends.
