According to Entertainment Weekly, folklore is the only album this year to sell one million copies in the US.
Taylor Swift’s eighth studio album also returned to the No. 1 spot on Billboard Top 200 recently. Released on July 24, 2020, the music album has already received gold and platinum status.
The pop singer is the first artist this year to sell out a million copies of an album in the United States.
The album sold additional 50,000 copies last week when it crossed the mark of 1 million in the US. Previously, it became the best selling title of 2020 in September itself.
Since its July release, Swift’s album spent six straight weeks on the top on Billboard 200 chart.
Last month was also big for her as she broke Whitney Houston‘s record. In terms of most cumulative weeks on No. 1 by a woman, Taylor left Houston behind.
Whitney Houston had 46 weeks atop the Billboard 200 chart. And with folklore, Swift now has a career total of 47 weeks ruling the chart.
Taylor came up with the album during quarantine, writing the songs and creating the tracks. The title is mainly associated with indie folk, alternative rock, and electro-folk genres.
Producers on this album include Aaron Dessner, Jack Antonoff, and Taylor herself. There are a total of 16 tracks on this project. Several notable songs are the 1, my tears ricochet, and cardigan.
After the enormous success of folklore, the lover hitmaker will aim to develop something more interesting. And that’s for sure considering that she knows how to make transitions between genres.
Earlier this month, she also secured three People’s Choice Awards nominations. She’s up for Female Artist of 2020, Album of 2020, and Soundtrack Song of 2020 for Only the Young on Miss Americana.
Taylor’s past releases were different from her roots of pop and country that she mainly worked on until 2014. For the last six years, she emphasized more on experimenting with heavy pop styles.
However, with folklore, she returned to her original self of mostly soft, calm, and gravitating music. Her fans were left shocked and mesmerized when she dropped the album without notice in July. It was unexpectedly overwhelming to witness a new project from one of the most iconic singers/songwriters in the modern-day music era.
As of now, it looks like her album will go even beyond, selling more copies next the year as well.
