Food Wars was one of the several anime series which was greatly affected by the global pandemic. The fifth season of the title has only aired two episodes when industry-wide shutdowns affected its production works. Because of this, the show was forced to go off the air.
However, after being tight-lipped for a few months, the official Twitter account of the anime dropped a new release date for the installment. The announcement stated:
“Due to the effect of the spread of COVID-19, further broadcast of the fifth plate will be postponed till July 2020. Further information will be announced as soon as the new date is fixed. We apologize for the inconvenience.”
Since some parts of Japan have already lifted quarantine directives, Food Wars is gearing up for its highly-anticipated return. The official website of the anime debuted a promotional trailer to hype the series’ comeback.
As a nod to the season’s beach episode, the first part of the clip featured Food Wars chefs in their swimwear. The video recapped the first two episodes of the season and then teased some of the upcoming ones. Moreover, the trailer showcased the new characters that will be added to the roster.
The promotional clip has also revealed details regarding the anime’s fifth season. As seen in the clip, the season will restart its broadcast from episode 1 on July 3. The brand-new episode 3 will then air on July 17.
Crunchyroll’s official synopsis of Food Wars reads:
“Shokugeki no Soma centers on Yukihira Soma, a middle school student who is determined to surpass his father’s culinary skills. One day, his father decides to close down their family restaurant and hone his skills in Europe. Before leaving he enrolls Soma in an elite culinary school that is extremely difficult to enter with a graduation rate of only 10 percent. Will Soma be able to improve his skills, or will the kitchen prove to be too hot?”
The manga series, which Yuto Tsukuda wrote and Shun Saeki illustrated, ended last year with Chapter 315 in Volume 36. Consequently, the three-chapter epilogue called Shokugeki no Soma: Le Dessert brought the total number of chapters in the story up to 318.
The fifth season, which ended airing in 2019, adapted up through Chapter 263. This means that the fifth installment only has 55 chapters left to adapt. Therefore, it’s very likely that Food Wars will have its finale in season 5.
However, neither the show nor the team behind it has commented on the matter. Thus, everything should be taken with a grain of salt in mind.
