France reports new record COVID-19 cases in latest surge

France has seen an overall 6-percent increase in new COVID-19 cases in the last seven days.

The World Health Organization has reported that new COVID-19 cases in Europe are increasing these past few weeks. Several nations across the continent have contributed to the apparent rise, and these include France.

Apart from the new daily record infections, the numbers of COVID-19 hospitalisations are also increasing. Recent reports noted that these are some signs that the virus is ramping up again in the country.

On Wednesday, the nation home to over 65 million individuals detected more than 10,000 new COVID-19 cases. Reuters reported that this is the first time the tally has topped the mark since September 14.

New record COVID-19 infections in France

Health officials recorded a total of 10,050 daily new COVID-19 infections in France. This brings the cumulative figure to more than 17.8 million.

Data from Worldometers show that there was an increase of 6 percent in the last week. The country went from detecting more than 38,000 new infections during the week prior to recording over 40,000 new cases in the last seven days.

Officials have seen similar trends in the hospitalisation figures. The latest new record stands at 84, which is a “rise unseen since September 6.”

While the weekly death change remains zero, the country tallied more than 30 new deaths on Wednesday. As for the number of COVID-19 patients in intensive care, it added 5 new cases in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 58 in over a week.

Latest mask mandates across the country

Following the increasing trends, the mask mandates in France will extend again to French school kids in 39 regional departments. The added measures, which the government announced on the same day, will start from next week, according to a separate report from Reuters.

The rules of mask-wearing inside classrooms will remain the same for students in secondary education, according to local media The Local. Likewise, all adults are required to wear face masks on all public transportations, as well as indoor public spaces that are not a “health pass venue.”

COVID-19 vaccinations

Meanwhile, vaccinations across the country are still ongoing. It has already vaccinated more than half of the eligible population.

According to Our World In Data, about 76 percent of people have already received at least a dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. This equates to over 51 million individuals.

The share of people who have already completed their vaccinations is 68 percent. Even so, officials encourage the eligible public to get their booster doses for additional protection, especially now that new cases are surging in France.
