July was a battle between two anticipated titles – Ghost of Tsushima and Paper Mario: The Origami King. The numbers have come in, and there’s a clear winner in terms of sales between the two titans.
Both Nintendo and Sony had a big month of July. This is because both companies released major titles – Paper Mario: The Origami King and Ghost of Tsushima, which are exclusive to their respective consoles. After a long wait, we now get to see which of the two titles gamers preferred to buy last July 17.
Sucker Punch’s samurai epic wins
DualShockers reports that Sucker Punch’s biggest game to date sold four times more in the UK over Paper Mario: The Origami King. This may come as a surprise as Nintendo’s new Paper Mario comes from an established popular franchise, whereas Sucker Punch’s game is an entirely new IP.

It’s worth noting that while the game did great in terms of sales, it still pales in comparison to what The Last of Us Part II made last month. Of course, this shouldn’t be surprising as the game is highly anticipated. It’s also a follow up to a classic that fans have been longing to continue for a long time.
Why is the new IP a success?
Sucker Punch took a big risk with Ghost of Tsushima as it’s an entirely new IP that’s launching along with established names. Many believed that as it was launching so close to The Last of Us Part II and at the same time as the new Paper Mario, it would’ve struggled in sales.
However, Sucker Punch’s samurai epic was met with financial and critical acclaim. It is one of the best-reviewed titles of 2020 so far, and it’s a contender for game of the year.
Aside from its perfected combat system and amazing open-world, the game is praised for its attention to detail and respect for the source material. Even Japanese critics have praised the game. Almost a week in, the game continues to wow critics and gamers alike.
Ghost of Tsushima is a financial success. This makes it an excellent swan song for the PlayStation 5. Sucker Punch’s dedication to perfecting the game has paid off, and this could pave the way for better games in the future from the company. Now, fans are hoping that some form of extra content comes to the game soon.
