‘Ghost of Tsushima’ gets gameplay trailer stylized like Japanese cinema

It’s no longer a secret that Sucker Punch Productions is taking a lot of inspiration from Japanese culture for the development of Ghost of Tsushima. Now, to give an ode to classic Japanese films, the developer released a trailer that gives tribute to the era.

Ghost of Tsushima is a samurai epic that tells the story of Jin Sakai. In it, he tries to fend off a Mongol invasion. The devs have said before that the game is deeply inspired by classical Japanese samurai films. The recent trailer for the game shows off exactly how deep this inspiration goes.

New gameplay and story trailer revealed

The game’s new trailer launches a week before the release of the upcoming samurai game. It’s an impressive visual trailer that is capped with the classical font seen in Akira Kurosawa movies. Like a classic film pulled straight out of the reel, the trailer also comes with tiny lines that appear on the screen as if it were an old movie.

Akira Kurosawa is a renowned Japanese director known mostly for his work in samurai films. Some of his notable work includes Seven Samurai, Rashomon, and Yojimbo. It’s not surprising that Sucker Punch Productions is taking inspiration from the director as he is the godfather of samurai films. The developers have even included a mode named after the director.

The tiny details

Sucker Punch Productions put a lot of heart into making Ghost of Tsushima. They wanted to ensure that they can encapsulate Japanese culture in the game.

For the world, the developers visited the actual island based on the game to draw some inspiration from it. The developers were able to create a world that’s as close to reality as possible. However, they do admit that it isn’t a complete reimagining of the real-life location.

The developers also put a lot of heart into making sure that the game’s combat system feels as great as possible. Since this is a samurai game, wielding the katana must feel as authentic and as fair as possible.

Ghost of Tsushima launches on July 17 exclusively for the PlayStation 4. The game is expected to be one of the best games this year. It’s even looking like a Game of the Year contender on the eyes of many. Let’s just hope that the game lives up to expectations as it is also Sucker Punch Production’s biggest game yet.
