Ghostbusters is a 1984 movie revolving around three paranormal scientists fired from jobs for their research on ghosts. After losing their jobs, they start a paranormal consulting and ghost capturing service in New York.

It had an ensemble cast including Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, Harold Ramis, and Rick Moranis. Ivan Reitman was the director of the film. Actors Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis were the writers for the story.

The movie was a critical and commercial success, with praises for its comedic aspect. The casting of Bill Murray was essential to its hit. The movie went on to collect nearly $300 million.

“Ghostbusters”: Problem with sequels

Ghostbusters got another sequel titled Ghostbusters II. It had the same main cast but did not prove to be as successful as the predecessor. Sony decided to produce a sequel in 2014. But, Bill Murray refused to act, and another actor Ramis died in 2014. So they produced a reboot, which did not taste the success at the box office.

A much-needed move

After such attempts, Sony announced the making of another movie in the franchise, Ghostbusters: Afterlife. The movie has actors such as Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, and Paul Rudd. Actors from the first movie, such as Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, and Annie Potts are reprising their original roles.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife is set around a family of a single mother and two kids moving to their grandfather’s property in a small town in Oklahoma. After experiencing mysterious earthquakes in the town, the family decides to find out their late grandfather’s legacy and his link to the legendary Ghostbusters.

This sequel movie has Jason Reitman, son of Ivan Reitman, the director of Ghostbusters (1984), as the director, with Gil Kenan and Jason writing the story. The movie’s worldwide release rights are with Sony.

Sony released a statement announcing that it moves the film from a release date from March 5, 2021, to June 11, 2021. The studio had plans to release it on July 10, 2020, until COVID-19 disrupted the film industry.

“Don’t Breathe” sequel

Sony also revealed its plans to release the sequel for the surprise hit horror film Don’t Breathe. The first movie was a worldwide hit, grossing $157.8 million. The sequel has the prequel’s director Fede Álvarez as a writer with this movie’s director Rodo Sayagues. This is his directorial debut.

The second movie will be released on August 13, 2021.
