GOG Games has now responded to the backlash against Hitman: Game of the Year Edition, noting that those unhappy with the online requirement for some parts of the game are free to refund the title.
In the recently released Hitman: Game of the Year Edition, a controversy sparked a backlash within players from GOG. From what it seems, fans are unhappy with the constant internet connection needed by some parts of the game. GOG itself has now responded, noting that they “will not tolerate review bombing.”
GOG advertised DRM-free offline experience
The problem started with GOG advertising the launch of Hitman GOTY as a game that doesn’t need an online connection. Many looking to buy from the storefront usually do because of their games’ lack of DRM. GOG’s DRM Policy usually removes software like Denuvo and always-online connection.
So far, Hitman’s primary campaign, as well as its bonus missions, are 100% offline. Even then, DLC and user-generated Contracts need an online connection for them to be playable. These include DLCs like Escalation missions, as well as Elusive Targets.
As expected, players disliked the need for an online connection, feeling that the launch was falsely advertised. Other users even called the announcement “extremely misleading”, considering that the release is only partially offline. Other players note that playing some modes offline doesn’t translate to unlocking new content.
GOG encourages players to exercise refund rights
The review bombing of Hitman: Game of the Year Edition is pushing GOG to take action with the release. According to their response on their forum, a representative is encouraging players to exercise their right to refund if they are unhappy with the game. In addition, the company is noting that it will not tolerate the review bombing.
“Thank you for bringing this topic to our attention,” said their rep. “We’re looking into it and will be updating you in the coming weeks. In case you have purchased Hitman and are not satisfied with the released version, you can use your right to refund the game.
“At the same time, while we’re open for meritful discussion and feedback, we will not tolerate review bombing and will be removing posts that do not follow our review guidelines.”
GOG is also adding a disclaimer on the Hitman page. They’re now adding that the game requires an online connection after the fact. Hitman: Game of the Year Edition will be sold full price at $60 but currently has a 70% off. GOG did not further elaborate if their original announcement was an oversight.
