The Pixel 4a 5G and Pixel 5 are the latest Google phones to arrive this year. The latter model might not be the flagship device fans are hoping for.
Google has pushed back the release of the Google Pixel 4a for several months now. However, the leaks continue to appear for the upcoming devices.
One leak includes the codename “redfin” and “bramble.” This time, the codenames proved to be the secret in confirming the upcoming devices.
The device confirmation did not come from hearsay, however. Dylan Roussel, from 9to5google, checked out both codenames on the latest beta Google Search app.
Previous searches yield no results. But, his last search adventure confirmed all of the upcoming Google Pixel devices this year.
There was no direct Pixel 4a or Pixel 5 name that came out on the search result. Instead, redfin and bramble came out.
What does this mean?
Several leaks have confirmed the specs of the following smartphones. But, the main differences between the two devices were not yet revealed.
There were rumors that the Google Pixel 4a will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G. It will have 5G connectivity as well.
Now that the two devices surfaced simultaneously, it is highly likely that both devices will have the same chipset.
However, it might cause confusion on the consumers if there are two Pixel devices with the same chipset.
The main difference between the two devices is rumored to be the build quality.
The Google Pixel 4a is expected to have a more affordable price. Thus, the materials used will likely be plastic. It is not a bad thing, though.
Samsung smartphones within the same expected price range have the same material as well. It is also more durable when it comes to accidental drops.
Google Pixel 5 will have a better internals
On the other hand, Google Pixel 5 may have the same chipset but with the better build quality.
The upcoming device may have an aluminum body with a glass front and back. It will probably look the same as other modern flagships.
Reports back then have confirmed that the Google Pixel 5 will not have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865. The Snapdragon 765G is more than enough though considering that the software experience is a Pixel’s strength.
Google might opt to put a larger battery, higher RAM capacity, and better storage options for the Pixel 5.
However, everything is pure speculation as of the moment.
Pixel devices have a tougher competition this year
Google Pixel smartphones are the hallmark of great mobile cameras. For instance, Pixel 4 is still one of the best Android smartphones for photography enthusiasts.
But, the problem is the Pixel lineup has a lot of contenders this year.
The flagship smartphone market is filled with great devices. The Samsung S20 series, OnePlus 8 series, Huawei P40 devices, and other smartphones all take great images.
The Apple iPhone 12 is expected to arrive earlier than the Pixel 4a and Pixel 5, so that is another contender.
If Google wants to retain its photography crown, its upcoming devices should have their unique feature.
The company may place better lenses and great image processing. Nobody knows as of the moment.
Google must learn from the Pixel 4 mistakes
Google Pixel 4 got a lot of flak when it came out last year. The battery life is sub-par, and the displays are very dim.
The image quality is still great top-notch, and Google must maintain that level.
However, Google must take note that image quality is not everything. The upcoming Pixel devices should be well-rounded devices that can take on the competition.
Nonetheless, the upcoming Google Pixel smartphones are still worth checking out. There is no release date yet, and users will have to wait for the next update.
