Google is rolling out new features in its video conferencing app to give intense competition to its rival Zoom. The company has announced that it is adding Chromecast support to Google Meet.
Google Meet is one of the many applications that are very useful nowadays. Many employees are working from home due to the health pandemic. And because of that, Google makes way for us to maximize our meetings and conferences.
Those of you who use Google’s app for video conferences can now cast your meetings on television. Google Meet is adding support for Chromecast, enabling you to cast content from your device to TVs using Chromecast, Android TVs, or smart displays.
Google Meet conferences on TV via Chromecast
Google confirmed today that their conference app Google Meet is adding Chromecast support to help better those who are working from home. You can now cast your meetings on Chromecast streaming sticks, Android TV, and smart displays.
“Earlier this year, we launched Google Meet in Nest Hub Max, and it just felt right to expand Meet to even more screens in your home,” Google’s Grace Yang wrote on the Chromecast support forum.
“We recognize that many schools are moving to distance/remote learning, and we wanted to support this new learning environment for teachers and students,” Yang said. “Meet on Chromecast will let you host or join meetings giving you the opportunity to connect with classmates, collaborate on projects, and even attend lectures.”
When casting a Meet to your TV, your audio and video feed will still be coming from your computer. Because of this, it might get a little awkward if you don’t occasionally glance at the camera to avoid looking distracted as per The Verge.
Supported Chromecast models include the Chromecast Ultra and both the current and second-gen Chromecasts. Google notes that “performance may vary” across Android TV and Cast-enabled displays.
If your meeting or conference is critical and significant, maybe stick to your laptop. If you are to perform and show something, it is also better to stay and use your computer.
How to Use your TV in a Conference?
Before casting your Google Meet to the TV, you must update to the latest version of Chrome first. Then open the meeting in Chrome and look for the “cast this meeting” option.
Open your meeting using Google Calendar or the Meet app. Select Cast this meeting. In the Cast tab, select the Cast-enabled device you want to use.
When your conference is done, in the bottom right of the screen, select the three-dot menu. Select Stop Casting Meeting to stop the connection of the TV and Google Meet.
