The upcoming Green Lantern TV series on HBO Max will have the production value of a feature film. Executive producer Marc Guggenheim revealed the ambitious plans for the show in a virtual panel for Comic-Con International.
Guggenheim recently left the Arrowverse on The CW to spearhead the development of Green Lantern for HBO Max. But it’s not really a loss, though. Guggenheim said he is open to having some of the Arrowverse characters in his new show.
During the virtual panel interview for Story Across Media (SAM) at Comic-Con, Guggenheim said that he and his team are approaching Green Lantern like a movie. The stories will be written for television but the production will be very appealing to the viewers.
“I think you have to approach it like a TV series and approach each episode like its own entity,” the showrunner further explained his statement. “You’ve got to make each episode a satisfying meal,” he added. “You’ve got to look at it with a different tempo than you would have in a two-hour movie.”
Show details and release date on HBO Max
Guggenheim is helping develop Green Lantern with showrunner Seth Grahame-Smith and co-executive producer Geoff Johns for Greg Berlanti’s production. Work on the set is earmarked sometime in 2021 but it’s a long way to go before HBO Max sets a release schedule since they are still writing the episodes.
The executive producer knows the Green Lantern mythology quite well, having written the movie that starred Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively in 2011 with Berlanti. Though that film earned mostly negative reviews, Guggenheim is ready to do some course correction with this upcoming TV series.
The new show will not just feature one superhero but a team of Green Lanterns, as it follows in the comic series. Guggenheim and his team will be introducing Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz, Guy Gardner, Alan Scott and more.
Berlanti said that this will be the “biggest DC show ever made.” Berlanti’s production is behind several DC TV shows: Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, Titans, Black Lightning, Batwoman, Stargirl, Doom Patrol, Superman & Lois Lane and a still-untitled Arrow spinoff.
Arrowverse cast in the new DC series
Meanwhile, Guggenheim also said in the SAM interview that they are not ruling out an appearance from the characters of the Arrowverse. For instance, actor David Ramsey played a version of Green Lantern in Arrow as John Diggle. The executive producer said that he might have the character back on the HBO Max series.
“I do love these characters, and I do miss working in this world,” Guggenheim said.
Casting announcements for HBO Max’s Green Lantern could likely come out by the end of the year.
