Greenleaf may be ending soon with its final season but it doesn’t mean it’s all over for the megachurch drama. Creator Craig Wright is working on a spinoff.
It appears that the producers are just not ready to permanently say goodbye to the Oprah Winfrey Network drama yet. This is good news for those who wish to explore more of the Greenleaf family’s life and stories.
Spinoff in the works
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Wright, along with the cable network and Lionsgate TV, are developing a companion series to the drama series.
The news comes after the announcement of the show’s fifth and final season release date. Fans poured out support for the last run and it all the more convinced Wright to bring to life a spinoff.
Wright and executive producer Oprah Winfrey had always planned to end the series after five seasons. But Wright had already considered doing a spinoff.
And now that he has received support from fans, the spinoff plan accelerated quickly.
The follow-up show is still in the early stage of development so there is not a lot of information surrounding it.
It’s still to be known which of the characters are going to be featured and what story arc they are going to delve into.
Season 5 update
Greenleaf is a drama series focused on the Greenleaf family and their sprawling Memphis megachurch. They are a family born and raised with faith and love and care for each other.
However, not everything is seen on the superficial. Beneath the picture of a perfect family is a den of iniquity.
There are scandalous secrets and lies. There is greed, sibling rivalry, adultery, and opposing values that are all meant to tear the family apart.
More of those challenges will surface in season 5 which is going to premiere on June 23 at OWN.
Most of the stars are expected to return to the show including the main cast Merle Dandridge as Grace, Keith David as Bishop James, and Lynn Whitfield as Lady Mae.
Kim Hawthorne, Lamman Rucker, and Deborah Joy Winans are also expected to be in the final season.
Season finale spoilers
As revealed in the official synopsis, season 5 will show the family trying their best to maintain a united front.
They are in the midst of losing their church to Bob Whitmore and Harmony and Hope Ministries.
But it’s not going to be easy as “secrets past and present create what could be fatal fractures in the family’s fragile foundation.”
Will the Greenleaf family stand the test of time? Stay tuned for more updates.
