Many fans have been waiting for the release of GTA 6 for years. However, Rockstar Games has provided no concrete details about the upcoming title up to this writing.
It’s been seven years since the last installment of Rockstar Games’ most popular franchise and Grand Theft Auto V has not shown any signs of slowing down at all, thanks to its continued development and updates.
A lot of the series’ fans have started to look forward to what could possibly be next for one of the most successful video game series of all time.
The longest pre-production
Rockstar Games has always been known for their incredibly single-minded way of developing video games, oftentimes taking a lot longer than most companies and working only on one title at a time. Going by this, it should come as no surprise to everyone that the next entry in their esteemed Grand Theft Auto series has been cooking for far longer than we expected, going back as far as a year after the initial release of Grand Theft Auto V.
This snippet comes from Chris Liberty, a well-known Rockstar Games insider that has successfully hinted at a few revelations from within the company in the past few years. In a now-deleted Reddit post (highlighted by Dintol), Chris Liberty reveals in a live stream that the tentatively named Grand Theft Auto VI has been in pre-production since 2014, which in itself is interesting for two things. First is that while this marks another long development timeline for Rockstar Games, it’s still far from the longest; Red Dead Redemption 2 started its development immediately after Red Dead Redemption’s release in 2010, making it a whopping eight years in the shed.

Second is that if true, then this means that Rockstar Games has been working on two projects simultaneously all this time, which is a significant departure from how they usually create their titles. With the nature of video game development usually varying from developer to developer, it begs the question of just how different this new Grand Theft Auto title will be, especially since a lot of the speculation points to an announcement coinciding with the release of the next generation of consoles.
Still in the dark
While the revelation itself may be a bit more trustworthy than most of the other circulating rumors, it’s still important to take a lot of it with a huge grain of salt. In terms of Rockstar Games and their unconventional approach to development, it’s still rather too early to say when we will get concrete news about this long-awaited title. One can only hope that it arrives during this lifetime, though, before the pandemic wipes us all.
