Hands-on Review with the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE

Share

The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE packs all the best features of the Galaxy S20 at a more affordable price. The device is the iPhone competitor Android fans need for 2020.

The Samsung Galaxy S20 “FE” Fan Edition has a price of $699 and begins shipping October 2. The price might be more affordable, but the key specs don’t seem to have suffered all that much.

As you might expect, the Korean tech company had to cut corners in a few places to keep the price in budget. From the display resolution and RAM to the charger and plastic back.

But none of these trade-offs are dealbreakers. The Galaxy S20 FE has the potential to be one of the best phones for its worth.

Specs, Camera, and Performance

The Galaxy S20 FE doesn’t bring any new software features beyond what Samsung has already made available to other devices. According to Sam Mobile, the Galaxy S20 FE will be supported until Android 13. Samsung has confirmed it will receive three major Android OS upgrades.

In terms of cameras, there’s only one lens that’s “new” with the phone. The Galaxy S20 FE uses the same 12-megapixel wide. Also, 12-megapixel ultra-wide sensors as the Galaxy S20 and S20+.

But what demands our attention is its 8-megapixel f/2.4 telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom and OIS. The preliminary tests that Sam Mobile conducted appear to be true of Samsung’s claims of a lossless 3x zoom.

There is no degradation in quality at 3x zoom compared to 1x. The new Galaxy phone is also capable of 30x “Space Zoom,” an excellent word for digital zoom. There’s sufficient detail in the pictures taken at 30x so you can get some fair use out of it.

Samsung is shipping the Fan Edition phone with the same chipsets found in the other Galaxy S20 models. It also comes with a 4,500mAh battery. You will get the Snapdragon 865 in select markets and the Exynos 990 everywhere else.

Also, both the 4G and 5G variants will be available for the budget phone. The processor is mated to 6GB of RAM and 128GB storage with support for microSD expansion. It’s genuinely offering flagship-level performance at a reduced price.

Design and Display

Physically, the FE device looks much the same as the rest of its lineup. It has a Gorilla Glass 5 display, and the back is made from toughened, matte plastic. Its front boasts a 6.5-inch Full HD+ resolution flat Super AMOLED display.

The Galaxy S20 FE has IP68 waterproofing, along with an in-screen fingerprint scanner. The device is available in a broader range of colors, including a vibrant red, lavender purple, navy blue, mint green and orange.
