‘Helstrom’ release date, plot, cast and ‘Avengers’ link explained

Helstrom, a new horror-fantasy series from Marvel Comics, will premiere on Hulu on Friday, Oct. 16, 2020, with 10 episodes. The show created by Paul Zbyszewski is based on the story of two Marvel characters, Daimon and Satana (Ana) Hellstrom.

Marvel Television originally planned Helstrom as the first show for its Adventure into Fear franchise. But the series became a standalone title under the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

According to HITC, while this dark superhero drama is in the MCU, it’s still a separate story from the Avengers timeline. Marvel apparently has no plans to do a cross over and it’s unclear if the show will mention anything related to the blockbuster films.

Apparently, the series also does not have a distinct Marvel logo. The fact that it’s airing on Hulu should differentiate it from the Marvel shows for Disney+ like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, WandaVision and Loki.

Who are Daimon and Ana Hellstrom?

The Hellstrom siblings, Daimon (Tom Austen) and Ana (Sydney Lemmon), are the son and daughter of Victoria Hellstrom (Elizabeth Marvel), the worst serial killer to be imprisoned. For their day jobs, Daimon works as an ethics professor while Ana has an auction house. In secret, however, the siblings work together to track down humanity’s most indecent people using their powers and ability to travel to Hell.

Their mother, however, is partly possessed by a demon and exhibits multiple personalities. It’s for this reason that the show was deemed too dark for the Disney+ platform so it went to Hulu.

In an interview with LRM Online, Marvel said that Helstrom has a realistic storyline despite being a supernatural and superhero series.

“I think it is a very different sort of wing of the Marvel mansion,” the actress said. “We’ve built this whole new section in this Marvel horror genre.”

Also in the show is Robert Wisdom, who plays the Caretaker. His character is the guardian of the secrets of the Hellstrom family. June Carryl also stars as Louise Hastings, the head of the psychiatric hospital where Victoria stays.

Developing the series

The siblings first appeared in Marvel’s Ghost Rider comics in 1973. It was suggested in the comics that they are Satan’s children with Victoria.

Hulu ordered the show in May 2019 with Zbyszewski as the showrunner. The writer and executive producer said that, aside from the scare factor, he gave the series “heart, humor and action” as it dissected the story of the family.

Filming took place in the fall of 2019 in Vancouver, Canada and wrapped up just before the pandemic lockdown in March 2020. All 10 episodes of Helstrom season 1 will be accessible to Hulu subscribers upon release on Oct. 16.
