HomePod software is now based on tvOS. Apple’s own smart speaker’s operating system has just been updated, but no longer on its usual iOS.
The most recent software update on various iPhone and iPad devices brought a twist on the HomePod’s operating system. Instead of being updated on the usual iOS, the tech giant’s smart speaker received it through the tvOS.
The differentiated tweaks imply that the HomePod will receive its OS update through tvOS now instead of the iOS. The Cupertino tech giant’s smart speaker will function the same way now as it did running with the iPhone and iPad operating system.
All of Apple’s operating systems such as watchOS, tvOS, and iOS operate on the same base. However, these operating systems vary on APIs, settings, and interface, making each one applicable to the specific device each OS was created for.
After the release of 13.4 software for HomePod, along with the iOS 13.4 and tvOS 13.4 in March, Apple customers began speculating on the reason why the tech giant would suddenly update its smart speaker on tvOS instead of iOS.
Reasons Behind the Switch
One angle that HomePod users are looking at is the possibility of iOS ending support on devices running at A8 chipset beginning with the iOS 14 launch. If proven true, the upcoming iOS update will no longer support devices such as iPad mini 4 and iPad Air 2 and the only generation of HomePod. Given that all said devices were powered by the A8 chipset.
tvOS code sharing on HomePod Apple TV also comes handy for Apple as both are always plugged into the power source. They do not need many enhancements to manage their power consumption, unlike the iPhone and iPad whom both rely on internal batteries.
Another common factor between Apple TV and HomePod is that they both provide a platform for HomeKit. Sharing the same code on two devices saves Apple the job.
More From Apple HomePod
Given the possibilities of Apple preparing HomePod for bigger things, it is probably one of the main reasons why the tech giant made all the pertinent changes on the smart speaker, according to the reports online.
Apple is said to be working on two new smaller HomePod speakers, making sure that the size does not in any way affect the appearance as well the performance of the smart speaker.
Reports also revealed that Apple is working on using the A14 chipset on its next line of release including the new Apple TV and the highly anticipated iPhone 12.
