Johnny Depp, reportedly, lost half of his net worth due to women, wine, and lavish lifestyle.
Depp is one of the most popular artists today because of his skills and talent. He knows how to give life to every character he plays. However, despite his success, his finances went downhill.
Here’s how the Pirates of the Caribbean star incurred financial losses over the years.
Depp’s financial trouble explained
The Tourist star’s net worth was estimated to be $400 million before it dwindled down to $200. However, it could be more than that because according to Rolling Stone he was estimated to make $650 million on films alone. Unfortunately, almost all of it was gone.
The losses involved the people surrounding Depp. He sued The Management Group (TMG), run by his longtime manager Joel Mandel, and his brother Robert for negligence, breach of fiduciary duty and fraud.
The suit cites that under TMG’s watch, his sister Christi received $7 million and his assistant, Nathan Holmes, $750,000 without his knowledge. In addition, he paid the IRS with over $5.6 million late fees. Meanwhile, TMG claimed that Depp owed them $4.2 million.
Depp lost more when his ex-wife Amber Heard filed for divorce in 2016. He ended up giving her $7 million which she donated to a charity.
Why did Depp lose his money?
Depp lost half of his money due to his lavish lifestyle. According to the Mandels, he had a $2-million-a-month compulsory-spending disorder. He also spends so much on wine. TMG claimed that he spent $30,000 a month on booze, but the actor disagreed.
“It’s insulting to say that I spent $30,000 on wine,” says Depp. “Because it was far more.”
According to TheThings.com, Depp is also a hoarder. He spent millions for his collection of guitars, artworks, and movie memorabilia. Depp also purchased an $18-million yacht that required thousands of dollars for maintenance monthly but ended up selling it to J.K. Rowling due to money problems.
He is also very extravagant to the people close to him. For instance, Depp spent $5 million for his late pal Hunter S. Thompson. Johnny Depp paid a special cannon to blast his ashes over Aspen, Colorado.
Depp was also in wrong relationships. Although he wasn’t married to Vanessa Paradis, she walked away with $127 million after their split. The exes share two kids Jack and Lily-Rose. Again, Heard walked away with $7 million after their divorce.
Depp has also been embroiled in a legal battle with Heard after their divorce. She accused him of being violent and abusive which cost him to lose his role in “Pirates of the Caribbean.” Many even questioned Rowling when she cast him on “Fantastic Beast” because he wasn’t as bankable.
Will Depp ever recover from the financial crisis?
Earlier this year, an audio recording of Heard confessing that she started their fight and she hit him leaked. Many were convinced that Depp was the real victim.
Today, he is gaining more fans again. In fact, many have been campaigning for “#JusticeForJohnnDepp” and they want him back in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise.
