There’s a lot we’ve seen from Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima, but there’s still a lot we’ve yet to know about this game. Classic samurai films are the main inspiration for the title, and some of the mechanics in-game are a clear call out to them.
Sucker Punch recently revealed a lot about the game’s combat during the recent State of Play for Ghost of Tsushima. One feature that wasn’t highlighted, however, was the duels between other swordsmen. Here’s how the feature works in the game.
Dueling the best of the best
Sucker Punch recently said that the game will be difficult in many aspects. Apart from the game’s unique take on exploration, it’s the combat that will give players a hard time in the upcoming title. While it’s easy to get overwhelmed by enemies in the game, what players should really prepare for are the duels.
According to the developers, players will be able to partake in one-on-one fights with other skilled swordsmen. Playing as Jin Sakai, players are essentially a master samurai in Tsushima, but there are others who hold the distinction as well. If Jin challenges these samurai to a duel, players should approach the battle with caution.
The developers note that the duels are going to be extremely difficult. It’s more about understanding the enemy’s attack pattern rather than button mashing and executing combos. In this Ghost of Tsushima feature, patience is what gets players through.
Some of the duels may be optional, but some are going to be mandatory as well. Players should treat the duels as the bosses in the game.
In terms of rewards, we’ve yet to see what players will get out of winning these duels, but it’s most likely that they will be given skill points, equipment, or charms for doing so.
An ode to classics
The game itself is an homage to classic samurai films. The duel feature is perhaps the biggest throwback to films like Seven Samurai. Fans of such films and the samurai culture, in general, will be excited to get their hands on this upcoming title that’s already generating a lot of buzzes.
Ghost of Tsushima launches on July 17 on the PlayStation 4. More details about the game are expected to be revealed within the coming weeks as the release date draws near. So far, we’ve already seen a huge chunk of the game, but other features are still yet to be unveiled.
