Hugh Jackman has been plagued with rumors questioning his sexuality. His wife, Deborra-Lee Furness, has had enough and responds to the rumors.
Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness have been married for over two decades already. So, if there’s someone who knows the Wolverine star, it would be Furness. And here’s what she said about the gay rumors about Jackman.
Hugh Jackman gay rumors addressed
Deborra-Lee Furness appeared on Australian TV show Anh’s Brush With Fame on Tuesday. During the conversation, she acknowledged the false reports on tabloids especially those attacking her husband.
“I see [some of] these magazines and they’re so mean-spirited. I hope people realize it’s all made up,” Furness said via Us Weekly.
“[Hugh’s] been gay for so many years. I was gay, too, when I did [my 1988 film] Shame. They were shocked when I got married,” she jokingly added.
In a previous interview, the Greatest Showman star admitted that the gay rumors affected his wife. Jackman told The Hollywood Reporter that Furness blamed the internet. She also believed the rumor was big and everywhere.
What did Jackman say about the rumors?
Hugh Jackman just laughed off when asked about the gay rumors. The Les Miserables actor shared how the gay rumors about him started.
According to Jackman, the rumors started in 2003 when he had to kiss his male co-star Jarrod Emick on stage for The Boy from Oz on Broadway. The move shocked his fans, who were surprised because they were used to seeing him as the macho Wolverine.
In 2018, the rumors about his sexuality persisted, and Jackman told the U.S. radio station about the on-stage kiss. He also shared how he laughed so hard about it.
“I was literally just locking lips… I started to laugh so hard,” Jackman shared.
“So I stay kissing him, because I thought, ‘I’m just going to laugh. I’m going to stay here until it subsides,’ and it never subsided and the whole audience could see my body shaking, so they started.”
Eventually, the same-sex kiss was removed from the script. In 2006, Hugh Jackman was no longer required to kiss his on-stage lover. At the time, Australian actor Murray Bartlett played the role opposite Jackman.
Jackman and Furness’ marriage
Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness are happy and satisfied with their marriage.
She said Jackman is hilarious and he makes her laugh. Meanwhile, she gives Jackman “all his best material.”
“When you love someone, you want the best for them,” Furness added.
