A tip from We Got This Covered revealed that plans have rolled for the standalone Smart Hulk solo movie. Incidentally, Smart Hulk isn’t the film’s official title. It is the term fans use to refer to the version of Hulk from Avengers: Endgame.
Fans will recall that Hulk/Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) appeared as a very articulate and smartly-dressed green monster in the Avengers: Endgame. Banner briefly explained in the movie that he started to embrace his scary green alter ego and learned to live with his two personalities.
The franchise has yet to detail how this evolution came about since Hulk was still in his most basic form and behavior in Avengers: Infinity War. If this development pushes through, fans should see the prequel as potentially a Disney+ release.
Ruffalo expressed time and again that he would like a standalone movie for his Marvel character. He told Variety that he’s been pushing for a spin-off as much as the franchise is also giving Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Loki their own solo stories.
“It’d be interesting to fill in all the blanks about what happened to him in between all these movies,” the actor said. “We’ve never really followed him into his life. He’s always kind of off on the side.”
Ruffalo also said that he pitched and discussed several ideas to Marvel boss Kevin Feige many times before. However, there are some legal hitches to the Hulk character. Marvel still didn’t have the rights to the solo films.
Universal Pictures owns the rights to the Hulk character’s solo movies, and the studio did come out with two versions. Eric Bana and Edward Norton played the character in movies released in 2003 and 2008, respectively.
But Marvel was able to use the character for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). There is a clause in the contract that allows his appearance as a supporting character. It’s the same arrangement Marvel has with Sony and Spider-Man.
Ruffalo said over five years ago that while Marvel has been working it out with Universal Pictures, it’s a well-known fact in Hollywood that the studios “don’t get along very well.” He said that he might be too old to play Hulk by the time the two studios arrive at a deal.
