If a user wants to sign in to Instagram under 16 years of age (under 18 years of age for some countries), by default there account will be set to private.
Facebook-owned Instagram is trying its best to provide a safe and secure platform for users. Instagram is in an attempt to introduce changes in the application giving security to young people.
Moreover, the user will still have the option to keep their account either private or public. Additionally, if a user under the age of 16 changes their account to the public will receive a notification to turn their account to private.
This security control for the under-aged users is necessary as the details and life of such users are very delicate. It requires proper attention and surveillance.
Furthermore, Instagram has always edged towards providing safety to these young users. Since March, the company has been showcasing a message to the young users who sign in under 16.
What is Instagram appealing to the under-18 users?
They are appealing to them with the virtues of keeping their accounts private. Certainly, this has created enough impact as far as the security concerns of the young users are concerned.
Moreover, Facebook is also attempting to make the advertisers target users under 18. Previously, could target any users based on their likes, interests, and several other aspects.

Facebook used to look for the user’s web browsing history, collected user’s data worldwide, and targeted the advertiser accordingly. However, now this targeting methodology will also include the aspect of age.
The bottom line of the content
Other factors were considered while targeting the audience, such as the number of likes on a particular niche, applications, and many more. Now, the advertisers can only target users who are under 18.
Based on the user’s age, location, and gender, Facebook, Messenger, Instagram will target such users efficiently.
Furthermore, the company adds that they are also trying their best to limit the interaction between the problematic users and the users aged under 16. Additionally, the company says that it is easy to find “potentially suspicious behavior” from any account on all three platforms.
Considering an example, we see that a user under 16 has blocked or reported a user. Then the user who has been blocked will not be seen under the explore search of any other user under 16. Additionally, they won’t even be seen in the Reels, Suggestion, and Explore section.
This step will surely bring a sense of security for the under 16 users. It’s high time to realize that these things are necessary and Instagram taking steps for this is appreciable.
