Last week, Apple officially submitted its entry to the 5G future. Considering its competitors, Apple can is already late in the game. However, the appetite for the new phone is still very high.
Unfortunately, Apple isn’t quite fair to its users around the world. Only its customers in the U.S. will get the mmWave 5G bands that can provide the fastest speeds. To add more insult to injury, Apple isn’t also telling its customers a very crucial note about 5G on the iPhone 12.
Apple never advanced the idea of having two slots on its iPhone’s sim card tray. For users that want to have two sims at a time, they will have to arrange an e-sim with their carriers.
Unfortunately, when dual-sim is run on the iPhone 12. The system will automatically throttle the 5G sim back to 4G LTE. In other words, running 5G on the iPhone 12 is only possible when the dual-sim feature is turned off. This note is very important for iPhone users that rely on dual-sims for work and personal use.
This bit of information was discovered based on the retailers’ training kit. One of the questions indicated there asks, ‘does 5G work with Dual SIM?’. The answer goes,
“When using two lines in Dual SIM mode, 5G data isn’t supported on either line and will fall back to 4G LTE. If customers are using eSIM only and are on a 5G-supported carrier and service plan, they’ll have 5G access.”
The problem can just be a software issue, which could be fixed with a patch. However, if it isn’t just a program issue, this information is so crucial that it can make or break the sales of the phone lineup.
Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo earlier noted that Apple was expected to perform best with the iPhone 12. However, the contrary seems to be true with the iPhone 12 Pro taking the same size of the cake as its more basic model.
The iPhone 12 Mini, meanwhile, is really just taking a mini portion of the total iPhone 12 sales. Kuo attributes the low sales to the small form factor of the new phone. New users are leaning towards spending more money to get more. As such, the iPhone 12 Pro is getting the traction that it wasn’t expected to get.
