Robert Downey Jr. is reportedly hatching a reunion between Iron Man and Captain America in Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) Phase 4. The actor wants his character to cross paths with Chris Evans’s character for one last time, a new report stated.
Tony Stark/Iron Man (Downey) and Steve Rogers/Captain America (Evans) carried the MCU for three phases until the actors said goodbye to their iconic roles in Avengers: Endgame (2019). Speculations of their return, however, continue to make headlines despite their departure, and Downey has some ideas on how to make this happen.
According to We Got This Covered, the next Avengers movie will bring in Kang the Conqueror as the villain in the present-day. But the new team will need Captain America’s help to beat this new threat, thus ushering Evans’s return.
Iron Man, on the other hand, will return to the MCU as the new AI voice of Spider-Man’s costume first. Downey wants the AI to also create a new body for this voice, which means bringing back the actor in the role.
After establishing their respective return, Iron Man and Captain America will eventually cross paths. But the news outlet made it clear that this plan is still in the “very early stages” and will have to be carefully carried out.
What’s happening in Phase 4?
MCU Phase 4 will kick off with Black Widow with Scarlett Johansson and the third Spider-Man movie with Tom Holland, which is rumored to feature Downey. It will also include the second Doctor Strange film with Benedict Cumberbatch and the fourth Thor movie with Chris Hemsworth.
The franchise will also introduce new superheroes consisting of the Eternals and Shang-Chi. But the universe will also expand in the small screen via several Disney+ TV shows like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Wanda Vision, Loki, Hawkeye, She-Hulk, Moon Knight, and Ms. Marvel.
Phase 4 will run until 2022 to potentially 2025. It might likely also include sequels to the Guardians of the Galaxy, Captain Marvel, or Ant-Man and The Wasp. Marvel and Disney, however, haven’t scheduled these last three movies in their release calendar.
Restarting with What If?
Meanwhile, talks of Downey’s return in the MCU Phase 4 grew stronger after Jeff Goldblum revealed in a BuzzFeed interview that he recorded an episode for What If? The show is based on a Marvel comics with the same name. Goldblum confirmed that Downey lent his voice as Tony Stark.
What If? is an animated show that explores what could happen if major events in the MCU played out differently. The series will have 10 episodes and debut on the Disney+ streaming platform in mid-2021.
