Jared Padalecki’s ‘Walker’ reboot: Jensen Ackles open to directing

Supernatural might soon be over but Jared Padalecki has the Walker reboot to keep him busy next. His TV brother Jensen Ackles could also swing by his new TV show and direct an episode.

Padalecki’s new series is pegged as a “reimagining” of the crime series that starred Chuck Norris from 1993 to 2001. But instead of calling the show Walker, Texas Ranger, the reboot will simply go with just Walker.

The actor is not just the star but he’ll also be the executive producer. As one of the bosses, he can decide on hiring his Supernatural co-star to direct an episode.

Speaking with TV Guide, Ackles said that he’s open to coming to the new TV show’s set if he’s asked. He joked that it will give him a chance to “boss [Padalecki] around a little” as the director.

Walker plot, cast and premiere date

The new crime drama series, which will air on The CW, will have Padalecki playing the role of Cordell Walker. The character is described as a widower with two children, who returns home after two years of undercover work to reconnect with his family.

The actor’s real-life wife, Genevieve Padalecki, will appear in flashback scenes as Emily Walker. A part of the show’s continuing story will involve Walker digging up the dirt surrounding the untimely death of his wife.

Surrounding the ranger in the series are characters like Micki (Lindsey Morgan), his female partner at work; Liam (Keegan Allen), the gay brother and assistant district attorney; Bonham (Mitch Pileggi), the tough patriarch; and Abaline (Molly Hagan), the Walker boys’ mom.

The CW plans to debut Walker in January 2021 but the actual release date hasn’t been confirmed. The show will likely take the Thursday primetime spot that Supernatural vacated.

Norris gives his blessings

Meanwhile, Norris apparently gave the reboot his blessing after they needed his permission to re-develop the series. Padalecki wasn’t able to personally talk to Norris but he confirmed that the legendary actor apparently still owned the rights to the show’s concept.

Initially, Walker had an April production date before the pandemic struck. So, the production schedules have been re-set to mid-October.

The delay seems to be working out for the star, though. He’s able to grow out his hair and beard to look like Norris’ Walker. The cast and crew of Walker will be filming in Austin, Texas, where the Padalecki family actually live, along with their three children.
