Lisa Kudrow revealed that the popular sitcom Friends would no longer feature an all-white cast and be progressive if it was made today.
In a span of 10 years, the American sitcom television series Friends secured 10 seasons. Within its run time, it has garnered positive reviews from critics and has raked millions of fans. On top of that, the show has bagged two Creative Arts Emmy Awards and four Primetime Emmy Awards.
Friends’ humor is universal and it truly pictures reality among the six characters: Rachel (Jennifer Aniston), Monica (Courteney Cox), Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow), Chandler (Matthew Perry), Ross (David Schwimmer), and Joey (Matt Le Blanc). Because of this, it became a huge success in the entertainment industry. However, the popular sitcom would be completely different if it was created in 2020.
What Friends would look like in 2020
Lisa Kudrow, who plays Phoebe Buffay in the hit series provided insights about what Friends would look like in 2020. She pointed out that it would no longer feature an all-white cast and be progressive if the show was made today.
The actress admitted,
“Oh, it would be completely different. It would not be an all-white cast, for sure.”
Moreover, Kudrow highlighted scenes from the series which she thought was progressive during its run time in the late 90’s. She shared,
“This show thought it was very progressive. There was a guy whose wife discovered she was gay and pregnant, and they raised the child together? We had surrogacy too. It was, at the time, progressive.”
Kudrow was referring to an early scene in the series where Schwimmer’s character Ross Geller came to terms with the fact his wife, and mother of his child, has realized she’s a lesbian.
Furthermore, she believes that Friends did have meaningful and culturally relevant themes despite commentary of certain scenes and elements of the show not aging well.
