Jesy Nelson hit back to those who criticized her over an alleged blackfishing incident.
After leaving Little Mix, Jesy Nelson took on a solo career and dropped her debut Boyz with Nicki Minaj. Most fans expressed their excitement after seeing the singer again. However, others called her out for an alleged blackfishing to complete the music video.
People accused her of tanning her skin to look darker in her biracial music video. Unfortunately, not everyone found it amusing.
In her Instagram Live on Monday, Nelson addressed the issue and defended her recent appearance on her recent project.
According to the former Little Mix member, she never wanted to offend people of color with her Boyz music video and the song itself. She also said her music video resonated with what she used to listen to.
“These are the videos that I watched and thought were the best. For me personally, ’90s R&B were the best years in music. I just wanted to celebrate that. I just want to celebrate that era of music is what I love,” she said.
Nelson disclosed how hurt she was after learning she offended people with her debut.
In the end, the musician expressed how her intention was never to offend people. She also found it painful to suffer from backlash after celebrating something she loves.
Nelson reveals true color
In the same broadcast, Nelson touched on how she gets naturally tan whenever she stays outside, even just for a couple of minutes.
Per Nelson, she is a lucky White girl who can get a tan quickly. In fact, her former band member Leigh-Anne Pinnock once asked her whether she is not a mixed-race since she always gets darker than any members of the son.
“I wanted to come on this Live today as well and show everyone my hair is naturally curly. I’ve always had curly hair. I got it from my dad,” she went on.
Apart from her Instagram Live, she also shared an official statement to Vulture, saying she never intentionally wanted to become racially ambiguous.
Following the emergence of the issue, Little Mix members unfollowed Nelson on Instagram over the weekend.
Nelson left the group in December 2020 after performing with them for 10 years. She reasoned out she wanted to focus on her mental health and was unhappy performing with the girls. Despite her exit, all members assured her they are all still sisters.
