Jill Biden is an English professor at Northern Virginia community college. She assumed the second lady’s role in 2009 when Joe Biden became Barack Obama’s vice president.
“Most American women have both a work life and a family life, but first ladies have never been allowed to do so,” said Katherine Jellison, a history professor at Ohio University.
First lady
As a first lady, her responsibility will be to work on education issues. Additionally, she will relaunch joining forces, a mission started by herself and Michelle Obama in 2011. It aims to rally around military families.
Before the first lady
Jill Biden was born in 1951. She grew up in the suburbs of Philadelphia. Her father was a banker and mother, a homemaker. Jill divorced her first husband before she met Biden. She has held two master’s degrees and a Ph.D., after which she chose to become a professor at a college.
Biden’s support
Tragedy struck at young Joe Biden nearly five decades ago. He lost his young wife and daughter in a car crash. As a result, he was left alone to raise his two young sons, who were injured in the accident.
Jill met Biden while commuting daily from Delaware to Washington, where he served as a US senator. They got married in 1977, and she became the mother of Hunter and Beau. Later, they had a daughter Ashley who was born in 1981.
Political career
Jill Biden has been the second lady for eight years. In this time, the couple has been through two failed presidential campaigns, and now a successful White House campaign.
In a democratic national convention held in August, he described her impact on the tragedy scarred family. He said, “she put us back together.”
