Jodie Comer is reportedly in the running for the coveted role of Furiosa in the planned Mad Max: Fury Road prequel being developed by director George Miller.
Miller has already confirmed that he will start working on pre-production for the Furiosa spin-off and is actively looking to cast another actress to portray the character.
The role was originally played by Academy Award winner Charlize Theron half a decade ago, but considering that the new Furiosa film is a prequel, there’s a need to tap on a younger actress for the role.
This time around, Miller is now eyeing to cast Jodie Comer to play the character and hoping she’ll do a memorable turn just as Theron did back in 2015.
From spycraft to post-apocalyptic angst
The British actress broke through the mainstream by playing the assassin Oksana Astankova/Villanelle in the critically acclaimed espionage TV series Killing Eve.
For the role, Comer has since won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series last year, while getting nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress —Television Series Drama earlier this year.
With Killing Eve continuing to be a hit drama series through four seasons now, Comer will likely continue to attract offers for various film and TV projects.
If she does end up landing the Furiosa role, Comer would gain an excellent opportunity to add another accomplishment to a growing resume.
More high-profile roles in the future
The 27-year-old Englishwoman is set to feature in several upcoming movie releases this year and the next.
She will demonstrate her action chops in this summer’s thriller offering Free Guy, alongside Ryan Reynolds.
In the holidays, she is also expected to land a meaty role in Ridley Scott’s period drama The Last Duel, which also stars big names such as Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Adam Driver.
Another possible Furiosa
While it’s true that Comer is in the running to take on the Furiosa character, Miller actually has talked to another actress for the role.
As a matter of fact, the Australian filmmaker had approached Anya Taylor-Joy, who is set to star in The New Mutants later this year.
Like Comer, Taylor-Joy is a thespian in her 20s and has so far built a solid collection of roles in the past few years—Thomasin in The Witch, Casey Cooke in Split, and Emma Woodhouse in this year’s Emma.
What to expect in the prequel
To date, director Miller has not released any concrete details yet about the plot of the Mad Max: Fury Road prequel.
But from what can be deduced from the 2015 movie, the standalone Furiosa film should touch into the character’s origins as the leader of the warrior women group known as the Vuvalini.
Of course, we all know that she would eventually become an Imperator working for the warlord Immortan Joe. But what we don’t know right now are the exact circumstances of how that came to be, and of course, how she lost her left hand.
