Johnny Depp is not demanding a huge amount of money to reprise his role as Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean.
Johnny Depp was allegedly demanding for a huge sum to appear again in Walt Disney’s hit franchise Pirates of the Caribbean. However, one should take the report with a grain of salt because the whole story doesn’t add up.
Johnny Depp ‘allegedly’ cash-strapped
Globe published a report in March with a headline that read, “Jack Sparrow Eats Crow!”
The outlet noted that the Fantastic Beasts star was “cash-strapped” and was demanding a huge sum to return to the franchise.
“He’ll return for a huge fee — $50 million,” a dubious source said.
“Johnny feels vindicated and now wants the studio to show him the money!” the insider continued.
He “expects Disney to see the error of their ways and bring him back for at least one more movie.”
Depp didn’t demand $50 million to return to the franchise
Gossip Cop debunked the report for several reasons. The rumor-debunking site noticed that the numbers didn’t add up and called it a “silly” report.
In 2011, Johnny Depp earned $55 million for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. As the tabloid mentioned, Depp’s legal battle is looking better and better, so why would the actor ask for $50 when it was less than what he earned in the previous film?
The report also claimed that Depp was desperate for work, which isn’t true.
Depp just had two films that came out this year Minamata and Waiting for the Barbarians. Aside from that, his other film, Fantastic Beasts, will be coming out next year. The movie was produced and written by J.K. Rowling.
Gossip Cop also noted that the amount mentioned was the same figure Depp made when he filed a lawsuit against his ex-wife Amber Heard.
The Tourist actor filed a $50 million defamation lawsuit against Heard in 2019, Deadline reported.
Jack Sparrow means more to Depp
The report also alleged that Johnny Depp considered his role in Pirates of the Caribbean as a paycheck. Gossip Cop refuted because the actor also used his character for his charity works.
In 2017, Depp showed up as Captain Jack Sparrow when he visited the BC Children’s Hospital in Vancouver. He also did the same in 2015 while filming in Australia when he visited Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital in Brisbane, ABC reported.
“He took the time to really engage with them and make them smile and laugh,” Pamela Smith, hospital spokeswoman, said about Depp.
Depp did it again when he made a virtual visit to cheer up the patients at Queensland Children’s Hospital in June, Daily Mail reported.
“It’s been a couple of years since I’ve been there and I miss it and I wanted to say hello,” Depp said.
“It’s a wonderful facility. I’m with all of you and I send you all my love, all my irreverence and ignorance, because it’s fun to be irreverent and ignorant. Thank you for sticking with me through all these very strange years.”
