Who can ever forget the 2012 dark-comedy movie, Dark Shadows? Here, Johnny Depp played the role of Barnabas Collins. However, some said that amongst their many movies together that Tim Burton directed, this, by far, is the worst.
According to the AV Club, the movie project was the idea of Amber Heard’s former husband. He loved the classic supernatural soap opera with the same title from the 1970s. So, he wanted to make a movie adaptation of it and play the role of the vampire Barnabas Collins.
He then convinced the 61-year-old director to do the project, and with its dark-gothic-themed material, he gladly accepted. The film quite did well at the box office, although not as successful as everyone would expect from a Johnny Depp-Tim Burton movie.
Despite being not a hyped film, it cannot be denied that Dark Shadows is a fun movie. The movie represents a combination of gothic romance and an unusual comedy.
It shows how Tim Burton tries to recreate the original story’s already stranged theme. Although they seem to struggle with their approach, the cast’s individual moments still glow, thanks to its wonderful cinematography.
Johnny Depp and Tim Burton’s first movie together was the 1990 movie Edward Scissorhands. They have been friends for such a long time that they will always have each other’s back, The Things noted.
Since then, they have worked together for a lot of films, like Sweeney Todd, Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, and Corpse Bride, among others. They remain loyal to each other and may work on more movies together.
Johnny Depp and Tim Burton collaborated for the second adaptation of Roald Dahl’s 1964 novel Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in 2005. It was a success, earning $475 million at the box office. Helena Bonham Carter was also part of the film. She is also Tim’s frequent collaborator and ex-wife.
The two also worked on a dark version of the adventure fantasy film Alice in Wonderland in 2010, which earned $1.02 billion. Tim Burton is known for incorporating dark and gothic themes to his movies, so this film adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s classic book is no strange to that. Johnny Depp perfectly plays his role as The Mad Hatter, and the film’s profit speaks volumes to that.
