Winona Ryder and Vanessa Paradis will no longer testify on behalf of Johnny Depp for his ongoing libel case trial against The Sun.
The court will no longer call the former lovers of Johnny Depp to give evidence in support to the actor. The 57-year-old star’s barrister, David Sherborne, told the court that the plaintiff’s legal team had decided they didn’t need to hear from the two women.
Ryder, Paradis no longer need to give evidence
Ryder and Paradis were supposed to make an appearance this week through a video link, but it didn’t happen.
At the start of the trial’s eight-day, Sherborne said, via Deadline, there’s no need to call either Ryder or Paradis. The lawyer explained it was because the defendant’s case is that the father-of-two was never violent toward his two exes but only, allegedly, to the Aquaman star.
“There is no need to reschedule those witnesses, much as it would have been a pleasure to have them here,” he told the court.
Paradis’ statement about Johnny Depp
Paradis was supposed to give evidence on Thursday. At the preliminary hearing, she already gave her witness statement in support of Johnny Depp’s case.
“I have known Johnny for more than 25 years,” she said. “We’ve been partners for 14 years and we raised our two children together.”
The two had been together for over 14 years and shared two kids, Lily-Rose and John Christopher.
“Through all these years I’ve known Johnny to be a kind, attentive, generous, and non-violent person and father,” Paradis continued. “He was never violent or abusive to me.”
Ryder’s supposed appearance
Ryder was supposed to give her evidence on Wednesday, but the court didn’t have the time to hear the actress.
At the preliminary hearing, she also gave a witness statement to defend Johnny Depp, to whom she was engaged to in the 1990s.
“I cannot wrap my head around [Amber Heard’s] accusations,” her court document read. “He was never, never violent towards me. He was never, never abusive at all towards me.”
Amber Heard’s accusations against Johnny Depp
Amber Heard claimed Johnny Depp abused her for a total of 14 times throughout their three-year relationship.
The Pirates of the Caribbean star has vehemently denied the accusations. He also sues the British newspaper The Sun over a malicious 2018 article it wrote about him, calling him a “wife-beater.”
According The Sun, the three-week trial is “already running late” as the questioning of witnesses is taking longer than expected. Johnny Depp alone had spent 30 hours in the witness box.
