Julia Roberts and Matthew Perry dated in the past. Before their romance started, he allegedly asked her to guest-star on Friends. However, she didn’t make it easy for him to get what he wanted.
In an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter, executive producer Kevin Bright shared some details about Julia Roberts and Matthew Perry.
Roberts appeared on the second season of Friends on the episode entitled The One After The Super Bowl. Apparently, Perry wanted Roberts to be on the show, according to Bright.
“She wrote back to him, ‘Write me a paper on quantum physics, and I’ll do it,'” Bright continued. “My understanding is that Matthew went away and wrote a paper and faxed it to her the next day.”
According to Friends writer Alexa Junge, both actors were at the prime of their careers at the time. She believed that they had met before the episode. However, she noticed that Julia Roberts was interested in Matthew Perry from afar because he was so charming.
There were a lot of flirting between Roberts and Perry over faxing. The Pretty Woman star even gave him questionnaires asking him why she would go out with him. Everyone in the writer’s room allegedly helped Perry explained to her why. Apparently, they were able to convince Roberts.
Co-writer Jeff Astrof also recalled how it was having Roberts on set. She reportedly kept saying, “Chandler’s so funny” while they stood on the sidelines, and he told her he wrote all of his lines. He wasn’t sure if she fell in love with Perry on the spot, but the pair soon started dating after shooting.
Perry and Roberts were linked from 1995 around the time they shot the special episode. When they were together, they kept their romance private. According to Insider, they were together throughout 1996 — the same year the special episode aired. However, they eventually split and started seeing other people not long after.
Julia Roberts is happily married to Danny Moder. However, there are lots of rumors claiming that their marriage is on the rocks. But all of those claims were not true.
Meanwhile, Matthew Perry proposed to Molly Hurwitz in November 2020. He shared the good news to People saying, he “decided to get engaged.” He described his fiancee as the “greatest woman on the face of the planet at this time.”
