Julia Roberts was almost a runaway bride like her movie, when she canceled her big day and spent it with the groom’s best friend.
Julia Roberts famously starred in the movie Runaway Bride in 1999. But years before the film, she called off her wedding to Keifer Sutherland and ran off with his best friend, Jason Patric.
Check out what happened as Mirror revisits the incident.
Julia Roberts and Keifer Sutherland’s romance revisited
Julia Roberts and Keifer Sutherland met when they filmed the 1990 flick Flatliners. They fell in love with each other, so Roberts called off her brief engagement to Dylan McDermott.
At the time, Sutherland was still married to his first wife, Camelia Kath. Later that year, they divorced. Roberts and Sutherland made their relationship official at the Golden Globe Awards in 1990.
In her acceptance speech for Best Supporting Actress in Steel Magnolias, Roberts thanked her “best friend.” Many believed that she was referring to Sutherland because she mentioned “blue-eyed, green-eyed best friend.” Sutherland is known for his two different colored eyes.
However, their happy days did not last long. A dancer named Amanda Rice claimed that she slept with Keifer Sutherland. She sold her story to multiple tabloids. Also, she claimed he told her Julia Roberts’ success from Pretty Woman turned her into an “insecure ice princess.”
What did happen on their wedding day
Julia Roberts and Keifer Sutherland were set to exchange “I Dos” at the 20th Century Fox’s Soundstage 14. The wedding venue was decorated like a garden paradise, and it was almost complete. However, the bride ran off with Sutherland’s best friend, Jason Patric.
Per Yahoo! Entertainment, Julia pulled the plug three days before their wedding date. On the day of their wedding, Sutherland moved out of Roberts’ house and into his apartment. Meanwhile, she enjoyed a turkey burger with Patric.
Also, instead of heading to Whitefish, Mont. at Sutherland’s 300-acre ranch for their honeymoon, she and Patric flew to Ireland. There were claims that they were “practically making love” on their flight.
What did Keifer say about the incident
Kiefer Sutherland commended Julia Roberts for canceling their wedding because he realized they were not ready. He admitted that they were young and were very much in love; that was why they wanted to get married. However, “this other thing kind of took over,” and their wedding, which was supposed to be between them, became a big issue.
“I commend Julia for seeing how young and silly we were, even at the last minute, even as painful and as difficult as it was. Thank God she saw it,” he told Rolling Stone.
Meanwhile, in the same interview, Sutherland addressed the question if he had forgiven his best friend, Patric.
“It’s not a matter of that,” he said.
“We were friends, and I’m surprised that I never got a call from him saying I’ve fallen in love with da-da-da. Instead, I found out from a stranger.”
At present, Julia Roberts is happily married to Danny Moder, despite various rumors questioning their marriage.
