Justin Beiber, alongside his wife Hailey Baldwin and Kendall Jenner, received backlash after people accuse them of being “tone-deaf” over COVID-19 comment.
The trio recently engaged in a casual conversation over Instagram Live, and one of the topics that they touched was about their quarantine in their luxurious homes.
Jenner, who was asked by Bieber about how she likes the place she got, told the couple that her current home was her “favorite place on the planet.”
“I worked for so long to get it to the point it’s at. I renovated it for like a year,” the 24-year-old Keeping Up with the Kardashians star said at her Beverly Hills home, which she reportedly bought for $8.5m.
Bieber on feeling blessed during the pandemic
What caught the fans’ attention the most, though, was when the “Yummy” singer talked about how “blessed” they are to be living in such great homes during this time of the pandemic.
“How blessed are we? A lot of people obviously in this time have a crappy situation,” Beiber said.
“They look at us and obviously we worked hard for where we’re at so we can’t feel bad for the things that we have but I think us taking that time to acknowledge that there are people who are crippling is important,” he added before Jenner cut in: “I think about it all the time.”
While the young celebrities were trying to be mindful of others, their message was interpreted differently.
The people online felt like the Canadian singer-songwriter was bragging about their privilege during the crisis.
Fans and followers throw criticisms
An influx of comments against the trio started pouring on social media. Some commented that they should just stay quiet while others challenged them to donate money to those who are having a “crappy” situation.
“Keep seeing that Justin Bieber, Hailey Baldwin and Kendall Jenner video on my timeline and it actually pisses me off beyond belief… give your ‘ooh poor people… too bad that’s not us!!’ speeches to each other on facetime instead,” one tweet wrote.
“That video of Justin Bieber, Hailey Baldwin and Kendall Jenner talking about how they feel bad for poor people because they understand it’s hard but that they worked hard for their stuff makes me so uncomfortable. Especially because Baldwin and Jenner have never been poor in their lives,” another netizen tweeted.
The Instagram Live conversation was recorded and shared on social media, garnering more than 3 million views. Bieber has not directly commented on the backlash. However, on April 5, the “Intentions” singer posted on Instagram about how they are currently working on ways to help those in financial crisis.
