The upcoming thriller series starring Kaley Cuoco, The Flight Attendant, is recasting one of its main characters because of a major rewrite.
Sonoya Mizuno will no longer play Miranda in The Flight Attendant. Deadline reported that Michelle Gomez is her replacement after the new show underwent a series of changes.
Miranda, described as a “hardened, savvy businesswoman with anger-management issues,” creatively changed characterization following the rewrites. Ultimately, the production decided that Mizuno was not the right fit for the character and had to replace her.
Gomez filmed her scenes in The Flight Attendant before COVID-19 shut down production in March. However, her casting announcement was not revealed until this week as the cast and crew are all set to return to work this August.
Show details, casting and release date
The Flight Attendant is an adaptation of a best-selling novel from author Chris Bohjalian. Cuoco plays Cassie, the flight attendant, who wakes up with a dead man next to her in an unfamiliar hotel in Dubai.
A night of heavy drinking wiped out Cassie’s memory of her escapades. Meanwhile, the FBI is waiting with questions once she returned to New York.
Cuoco stars opposite Game of Thrones actor Michiel Huisman. Also in the show are Zosia Mamet, Colin Woodell, Griffin Matthews, and Merle Dandridge.
The actress’ little sister Briana Cuoco will also have a recurring role on the show. She’ll play Cecilia, described as a “quirky and ambitious assistant” who eavesdrops on her boss’s phone calls.
“We only have three [episodes] left [to shoot]. I would really like to finish the season and if we can actually get this thing done, then we can air it this year, which would be unbelievable,” Cuoco said about the resumption of filming her new series.
Back on the set!
On Tuesday, Aug. 4, Cuoco shared a video from the makeup room of The Flight Attendant in New York via her Instagram Stories. The actress had curlers on her hair and was getting ready to get prettified. Everyone in her glam team was wearing face masks as they prepared to style the actress. One of her dogs also joined her in the makeup room.
Cuoco said that they have to observe “a million safety protocols” on the set. The actress admitted that going back to work feels and looks different because of the COVID-19 precautions.
The Flight Attendant is coming to the streaming platform HBO Max in a still-unconfirmed date. Warner Studios picked up the show for a full series in early 2019.
