Kevin Garnett is reportedly interested in buying the Minnesota Timberwolves with the hopes of bringing a championship to the franchise.
When NBA fans discuss the Minnesota Timberwolves, they always go back to the era of Kevin Garnett with the team. The arrival of Garnett altered the status of the Wolves into becoming a legitimate contender. However, they were not strong enough to force through the era of the Lakers-led Kobe and the high and mighty San Antonio Spurs.
Since reaching the Western Conference Finals in 2004, they have gone on a steady decline to irrelevance in the West. Garnett and a group of investors reportedly want to change that fate.
Kevin Garnett may purchase the Wolves
The Wolves are in the market for a new owner. The 79-year-old Glen Taylor has opened the floor for bidding to whoever wants to succeed him in owning the Wolves. Fortunately, Kevin Garnett is strongly considering joining. He said,
“My passion for the Minnesota Timberwolves to be a championship team is well known but I have a deeper affection for the city of Minneapolis. I once again want to see Minneapolis as the diverse and loving community that I know it is. No two people love the city more than myself and Glen Taylor and I look forward to trying to work with him to achieve my dream.”
Taylor was clear that the sale wasn’t because of the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, he clarified that he intends only to consider bids that will keep the Wolves in Minnesota. Any bidder that wants to shift the franchise to another State will not be entertained.
Minnesota’s recent woes
Minnesota was fortunate to have drafted Kevin Love two years after Kevin Garnett left the team to join the Celtics. Love was a force to be reckoned with, posting consistent double-double stats per game. However, the talent around him lacked which resulted in consistent failures to enter the Playoffs.
In 2014, the Wolves drafted first to take Andrew Wiggins. The following year, they again took the first pick to bring home Karl-Anthony Towns. The team tried their best to build a team around the two promising young players but again found little success. As such, they decided to trade away Wiggins to the Warriors to get D’Angelo Russell to team up with Towns this season.
It remains to be seen if the new duo will have more success with the team. However, they remain positive for their future.
