Lana Del Rey contended that she is not “racist.”
Lana Del Rey recently announced the official release date of her poetry and spoken word book. Earlier this month, the singer shared with her fans and followers that the Violent Bent Backwards Over the Grass is set for a July 28 release, according to Vanity Fair.
This reportedly comes weeks after her controversial post on Instagram. Back in May, Del Rey released a type-written “open letter” on the platform. While she intended to call out critics, she received a huge backlash from various fans and other netizens because of her name-dropping.
Lana Del Rey not “glamorizing abuse”
Lana Del Rey called out “female writers” and “alt singers” in her post on May 21. Based on the open letter, she is “fed up” with them for saying that she “glamorizes abuse,” she said. She also described it as “pathetic” that critics are saying she has “set women back to hundreds of years.”
The singer then mentioned several artists in the post. These include Ariana Grande, Doja Cat, Cardi B, Beyonce, Kehlani, Nicki Minaj, and Camila [Cabello].
She asserted that these artists had “number ones with songs” centering on “being sexy, wearing no clothes, f—ing,” and cheating. But, in completing her “question for the culture,” she asked if she could go back to singing about “being embodied, feeling beautiful by being in love even if the relationship is not perfect.” This is reported without critics crucifying her.

Netizens confused, slammed her for her post
Following the controversial post, Lana Del Rey received tons of criticisms from various platforms, according to Insider. Several netizens also reportedly expressed their “confusion.”
As explained, they all saw the singer as one of the most “influential” and successful artists of the decade. It also reportedly made no sense considering that critics “highly praised” her previous records.
But, alongside the confusion, fans of the female artists that she mentioned reportedly got mad at her for dragging them into her post. As stated, her post is, “somehow,” racist as six of the artists she mentioned are “of color.”
Many fans then noted that she could have made her point without including the names of these female artists. It is as if she is “tearing down” her co-artists, one stated.
She responded to the critics
She responded to the criticisms days after. In a separate post on Instagram, she contended that she is “definitely not racist,” according to Business Insider.
However, Lana Del Rey did not reportedly apologize. Instead, reports said that she did it again when she brought FKA Twigs’ name in the video.
