Bloom got his breakout role as Legolas in the Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001 to 2003) from director Peter Jackson. The Amazon show doesn’t have any connection to the movies, and that works out quite well for the actor.
Bloom said that he is friends with a producer from the series, and he used to have a lot of questions about it. He realized that he must stop asking questions when it was pretty clear the series will not be a remake of the movies.
“I kinda had a few questions for him to begin with, and then I was like, ‘You know what? I don’t need to know anymore,'” Bloom said in an interview with Collider. “It’s not, obviously, a remake, it’s actually not based on the Fellowship or any of that, so I think it could be really, really interesting, from that perspective.”
Interestingly, Bloom said that he had conversations with Jackson about a Lord of the Rings remake while they were filming 20 years ago in New Zealand. He was psyched about the prospect of it.
Then, 20 years later, the Amazon cast and crew are back in New Zealand for the series. However, Bloom acknowledged that the story of the show is not the same as the trilogy, so he’s ready to watch and appreciate it as a fan.
“It was such an informative time that’s had such an impact and so it’s different, what’s coming, and I think that’s a good thing. It’ll be interesting. I’m gonna fan it up for sure. [Eating] popcorn, streaming.”
Meanwhile, actress Nazanin Boniadi took to Twitter to tease about the TV show. The actress is one of the 15 main casts, who have resumed filming following the COVID-19 restrictions.
Boniadi said in an interview with SBJCT, the upcoming fantasy series will be “really magical.”
“I can tell you that we had already started production before New Zealand had to lockdown because of the pandemic. We are all so very excited about what we’ve seen and experienced so far,” Boniadi said. “It’s really magical. Just beyond!”
It’s unclear who Boniadi will play in the Lord of the Rings, but her casting was confirmed early in the year. The show will also feature familiar characters from the original movie, like Galadriel, Elrond, and Sauron. Morfydd Clark’s addition as Galadriel is the only cast announcement so far.
Amazon has not yet set the premiere date for Lord of the Rings. The studio has plans for a five-season outing.
