Lucifer is heading back to production for the sixth and final season, and showrunner Ildy Modrovich revealed that she’s nervous about getting their first episode right.
Lucifer season 6 episode 1 will reportedly tackle the Black Lives Matter movement. While there’s excitement about addressing this social issue on racism and police brutality, the showrunner admits some apprehension in writing the story.
“[We want to] go at it through our characters’ eyes from an emotional place and not a preachy place,” the showrunner said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. “To really look at the situation socially, emotionally and have it resonate on a deeper level than just words or rhetoric.”
To prepare for this episode, Modrovich and co-showrunner Joe Henderson discussed with the writers and cast members. They want to execute the episode with care and respect, especially when many of the actors so are vocal about the issue on social media.
“We’re a pretty diverse room, so it’s taken a lot longer than most episodes to break because we have talked about everything,” Modrovich said. “There have been many tears shed.”
Next season will not have COVID-19
Lucifer season 6, however, will veer away from the coronavirus pandemic. Shows like Grey’s Anatomy and This Is Us will feature episodes about this global crisis in their upcoming seasons but not Lucifer.
Henderson said that the decision has to do with timing. By the time season 6 drops on Netflix, viewers won’t likely want to be reminded about the coronavirus lockdown.
Introducing Michael, the other brother
Meanwhile, Lucifer season 5 is set to launch on Netflix on Friday, Aug. 21, and this season will introduce Michael, the twin brother.
Tom Ellis will still play the character, who is the complete opposite of his titular character. The actor shared he’s not a big fan of Michael’s wardrobe.
“It’s the most disgusting flat-footed loafers I’ve ever seen,” the actor shared in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “He loves a turtleneck, somehow. And he’s also heavily into tweed.”
Ellis said that Michael is likely someone who trolls people on the internet and has a handle like @BitterAngel. The actor shared there are challenges to playing twins but he’s also getting an adrenaline rush from juggling two parts.
Lucifer season 5 will drop the first eight episodes all at once. The second part, which consists of another eight episodes, will air sometime in early 2021. Meanwhile, filming for Lucifer season 6 isn’t expected until early next year as well.
