MediaTek Dimensity 820 announced with higher CPU clock speeds and beefed-up GPU core

The Dimensity 820 chip is a more powerful version of the Dimensity 800, one with increased CPU and GPU performance.

MediaTek has expanded its Dimensity series of chipsets, with the official release of the Dimensity 820 SoC. The Taiwanese chip maker’s latest offering serves as a mildly upgraded version of the Dimensity 800, which was unveiled recently.

A more potent CPU and GPU output

While the Dimensity 820 is still based on a 7nm chip with Cortex-A76 and four A55 cores, the chip’s big A76 cores now run at higher clock speed, right at 2.6GHz. Additionally, the chipset features up to 16GB of LPDDR4x RAM.

The new chip’s accompanying Mali-G57 GPU also gained an additional core, which already up to 5. On paper, this should result in rendering games closer to the 120Hz refresh rate. Note that this should be paired with the right display panel. Ultimately, the resolution is still capped at 1080p+.

Other upgrades

Another upgrade of the Dimensity 820 chip is its modem, which is now capable of connecting two sim cards to a 5G network. There is also the 2CC carrier aggregation, alongside the 5G UltraSave technology for more seamless connectivity.

As for its photo and video front, the users can expect 32MP+16MP dual cameras. The chip can also support 80MP single cameras, with up to four concurrent sensors. A multi-frame 4K HDR recording is likewise recommended.

Redmi 10X series

In regards to the first phones which will be equipped with MediaTek’s latest, it is confirmed that the upcoming Redmi 10X series will debut with the said chipset.

According to a recent post from Redmi on Weibo, the smartphone series is set to be announced with an entry that is tipped to be the first come out of the 10X lineup. The device is confirmed to launch in China on May 26.

Xiaomi’s product manager Wang Teng Thomas shared that the Chinese tech giant has been working closely with MediaTek to customize the company’s newest chip. In effect, the purported Redmi 10X achieved a score of over 410,000 on its recent AnTuTu benchmarking.

Apart from the vanilla 4G-enabled Redmi 10X, Redmi is also speculated to launch a 5G variant, plus a Pro edition. All three are still in the works.

The supposed entry from the Redmi 10X series to be equipped with the Dimensity 820 chip is the 5G version. The phone is set to be launched with four RAM and storage tiers, which include 6GB/128GB, 6GB/128GB, 8GB/128GB, and 8GB/256GB.

The Redmi Note 10 is also rumored to be powered by the Dimensity 820 chip.
