The Dimensity 800U serves as MediaTek’s sixth system-on-a-chip offering which features 5G modem.
The sixth iteration off the Dimensity series – the Dimensity 800U- is now official. It is also MediaTek’s sixth SoC in the lineup to offer an integrated 5G modem. Alongside its siblings, the newest chip is also geared towards budget-conscious consumers who want to avail the latest-generation network.
Faster than the Dimensity 720 SoC
MediaTek’s Dimensity 800U is an octa-core chipset which features two ARM Cortex-A76 cores which are clocked up to 2.4GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores, at up to 2.0GHz. In terms of graphics, the chip boasts ARM’s Mali-G57 GPU and is equipped with a standalone AI processing unit (APU).
According to MediaTek, its latest Dimensity chip should deliver 11% and 28% faster CPU and GPU performance over the Dimensity 720 SoC, which debuted in July 2020.
The 5G modem that is embedded in the Dimensity 800U supports 5G + 5G dual SIM dual stand. It also has support for dual VoNR (Voice over New Radio), alongside sub-6GHz NSA/SA networks, and 5G two carrier aggregation (2CC 5G-CA).
LPDDR4x RAM and UFS 2.2 storage support
The new mid-range chipset from MediaTek also features the 5G Ultrasave technology which is tasked to manage the operations in the modem. The management is based on network environment and data transmission quality, which ultimately beef up the battery life of the host device.
On the other hand, devices which are equipped with the Dimensity 800U can handle LPDDR4x RAM and UFS 2.2 storage.
The chipset supports Full HD+ panels with 120Hz refresh rates. It is also confirmed to comply with HDR10+, plus MediaTek’s MiraVision PQ engine with HDR optimization for varying types of videos.
With the IPS in the Dimensity 800U, the chip should be able to support up to 64-megapixel image sensors. It can also house as many as four cameras on the rear.
The new SoC also features support for multiple trigger words for different voice assistants, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.1, and dual-mic noise reduction.
Still up for grabs
Smartphone manufacturers which will feature MediaTek’s Dimensity 800U in their future releases are still up in the air. The Taiwanese chipmaker confirmed recently, however, that Dimensity-powered phones are scheduled to debut in markets outside China in Q3 this year.
There is no word yet as to which smartphone will first make use of the Dimensity 800U chip.
