Meghan Markle felt helpless when she was pregnant while with the royal family, the duchess claims in her recent filings.
Meghan Markle sued Mail Online for publishing her letters for her dad, Thomas Markle Sr. In her recent filing, the duchess shared how vulnerable she was while expecting her first child with Prince Harry.
Meghan Markle shared her emotional struggles when she was pregnant
MailOnline acquired a copy of Meghan Markle’s court document against Associated Newspapers Limited, the owner of MailOnline and The Mail on Sunday.
In the court document, Meghan Markle said she had “become the subject of a large number of false and damaging articles’ in UK newspapers, specifically by Associated Newspapers titles, which caused ‘tremendous emotional distress and damage to her mental health’.”
Things were harder for the then-expectant mom because she was living away from her mom and friends. She couldn’t meet them plus the non-stop attack from the press.
“As her friends had never seen her in this state before, they were rightly concerned for her welfare, specifically as she was pregnant, unprotected by the Institution, and prohibited from defending herself,” the document added.
Markle’s case against the UK tabloid
Meghan Markle sued the U.K. tabloid over five articles – two in The Mail on Sunday and three on MailOnline, Mirror noted.
According to the court document, Markle identified five friends who gave an interview to People Magazine. The filing also claimed that Markle’s dad only came forward with her letter for him after the interview. He wanted to show that their claims about Markle’s tender sentiments towards him were not true.
Markle claimed that the tabloid only published part of her letters that made her look bad.
On May 1, High Court judge Mr. Justice Warby threw out Markle’s claim that the press waged a malicious campaign against her. The judge branded parts of the case as “wholly inadequate,” “impermissibly vague,” and “irrelevant,” Mail Online reported.
The judge also denounced one element as “embarrassing” because it puts the newspaper in an impossible position.
Markle vs Markle
According to MailOnline, the case has been dubbed “Markle vs Markle” because Meghan Markle’s dad will be called to witness for the tabloid. However, no date has been set for the trial.
Markle’s dad, Thomas Markle Sr., claimed that his daughter has been ignoring him. However, in the recent filing, Markle denied her father’s claim. On the contrary, it was her dad who had been ignoring her.
“The facts remain that: the Claimant called her father multiple times during the week of the wedding (all of which were ignored), that she did not change her phone number, nor block his number from calling her,” the court documents obtained by Town & County read.
