Meghan Markle hinted years ago that she wanted a life different from the royals, and that was even before she met Prince Harry.
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry decided to step back from their royal duties earlier this year. Many blamed the duchess as the one behind the decision. That may or may not be true, but Markle wrote an article two years before she married Prince Harry, saying that she doesn’t want to be a “lady who lunches.”
Meghan Markle made a blunt confession before joining the royal family
Meghan Markle wrote an article for Elle magazine in 2016. In her piece, she shared the struggles she went through from dusting herself down after lengthy spells working on humanitarian projects in Rwanda and going straight to an awards show.
“My brain, heart and spirit couldn’t shift gears that quickly, from the purpose-driven work I had been doing all week in Rwanda to the polished glamour of an awards show,” she wrote as quoted by Express.
“I’ve never wanted to be a lady who lunches; I’ve always wanted to be a woman who works. With fame comes opportunity, but it also includes responsibility – to advocate and share, to focus less on glass slippers and more on pushing through glass ceilings.”

Markle’s statement after joining the royal fold
The outlet noted Meghan Markle’s statement was symbolic of her struggles when she joined the royal family. She made it no secret that it wasn’t easy for her to be part of the royal machine, the outlet noted.
In the biography Finding Freedom, Markle also expressed her disappointment for “not having a voice.” When she was still a working royal, she was not allowed to comment on the various reports against her, even the false rumors.
Also, the former Suits star said she wants to be a woman who works, and that’s what she is doing now after leaving the royal family. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced that they want to be financially independent. They want to live by their own means and not from the royal family’s support.
According to reports, the Sussexes are already financially independent. Prince Charles has stopped supporting them after they signed the multimillion deal with Netflix.
Prince Harry and Markle are also expected to make money from speaking engagements. However, they might earn less because they have a long list of demands that might put off potential clients.
One insider also told The Sun that the two will likely turn down more events than accept them, especially when their brand reaches its peak.
